Polyoxymethylene (POM): melt temperature, drying, shrinkage
Typical values for Polyoxymethylene (POM, semi-crystalline) in injection moulding: melt temperature 190–215 °C, mould temperature 80–100 °C, shrinkage 1.8–2.3 %, drying: no drying needed. The processing window below shows melt and mould temperature on one scale; the app covers more than 150 materials.

POM at a glance
POM is semi-crystalline and stiff with good sliding and wear properties and low moisture absorption, but shrinks comparatively strongly. It is used for gears, spring elements, clips and precision parts.
POM degrades with too long a residence time or too high a temperature. Do not keep the melt in the barrel longer than necessary and choose a machine with a suitable shot size.
Processing data for POM
- Melt temperature: 190–215 °C
- Mould temperature: 80–100 °C
- Drying: no drying needed
- Density: 1.41 g/cm³
- Cavity pressure: 360–700 bar
- Processing shrinkage: 1.8–2.3 %
All values are typical figures for preselection. The manufacturer’s datasheet applies to the specific grade, and sampling on the machine decides the process.
Frequently asked questions
What processing temperature does POM have?
The melt temperature for Polyoxymethylene is 190–215 °C and the mould temperature 80–100 °C (typical values).
Does POM have to be dried before processing?
According to the typical value, no: Polyoxymethylene absorbs hardly any moisture. For storage in a humid environment or with additives, the manufacturer’s datasheet applies.
How high is the shrinkage of POM?
The processing shrinkage of Polyoxymethylene is 1.8–2.3 %. It depends on wall thickness, holding pressure, mould temperature and grade.
What cavity pressure applies to POM?
The range for Polyoxymethylene is 360–700 bar. The clamping force calculator and the app start with the mean of 530 bar; you can adjust the value.
