Polypropylene, glass-fibre reinforced (PP-GF): melt temperature, drying, shrinkage

Typical values for Polypropylene, glass-fibre reinforced (PP-GF, semi-crystalline) in injection moulding: melt temperature 220–260 °C, mould temperature 40–80 °C, shrinkage 0.3–0.9 %, drying: no drying needed. The processing window below shows melt and mould temperature on one scale; the app covers more than 150 materials.

PP-GF at a glance

Glass-fibre reinforced polypropylene is stiffer and stronger than unreinforced PP and shrinks less. It is used for vehicle parts, housings and load-bearing components.

The fibres orient themselves in the flow and cause direction-dependent shrinkage and warpage. Plan gate position and flow paths accordingly; the fibres wear the screw and the mould.

Processing data for PP-GF

  • Melt temperature: 220–260 °C
  • Mould temperature: 40–80 °C
  • Drying: no drying needed
  • Density: 1.12 g/cm³
  • Cavity pressure: 400–800 bar
  • Processing shrinkage: 0.3–0.9 %

All values are typical figures for preselection. The manufacturer’s datasheet applies to the specific grade, and sampling on the machine decides the process.

Frequently asked questions

What processing temperature does PP-GF have?

The melt temperature for Polypropylene, glass-fibre reinforced is 220–260 °C and the mould temperature 40–80 °C (typical values).

Does PP-GF have to be dried before processing?

According to the typical value, no: Polypropylene, glass-fibre reinforced absorbs hardly any moisture. For storage in a humid environment or with additives, the manufacturer’s datasheet applies.

How high is the shrinkage of PP-GF?

The processing shrinkage of Polypropylene, glass-fibre reinforced is 0.3–0.9 %. It depends on wall thickness, holding pressure, mould temperature and grade.

What cavity pressure applies to PP-GF?

The range for Polypropylene, glass-fibre reinforced is 400–800 bar. The clamping force calculator and the app start with the mean of 600 bar; you can adjust the value.
